Shopping!

I did indeed shop hard. And it was 20% off day at Half-Price Books. Here's what I got:

Dianetics, by L. Ron Hubbard (because I wanna know what the hell the John Travolta and Tom Cruise are studying)

Three of the "introducing" books. They're short, graphic novely books on various philosophers. I got the ones on Derrida, Sartre, and one on Romanticism.

Great Short Works of Willa Cather because we were talking about "The Sculptor's Funeral" in class last night and I was intrigued.

The End of the Affair, by Graham Greene (it's Donnie Darko's fault)

Collected Essays of Graham Greene (there are some goodies in there)

The Shipping News, by Annie Proulx, because I'm in love with her stories and it won a Pulitzer.

Film Theory: An Introduction, by Robert Stam to replace my undergrad film book that I sold. I need it to write a paper on Donnie Darko.

The Great Women Cartoonists, by Trina Robbins. Graphic novel about graphic artistis! Woop! Looks really interesting

I love boooks! Now I'm going to read Cane, by Jean Toomer. Trying to get ahead on school reading.

Ok, you must tell me about Dianetics when you are done. I was just talking about this with my friend today. We were musing what in the world Scientology actually aspouses and what could be in the books that is so compelling. Can't wait to hear from you.

I'm also reading a philosophy book, right now! It's a topic I've wanted to explore for awhile . . .

Anita,
I've heard some of what scientology is all about and it's CRAZY. Now that I say that I'll surely get some a-hole posting flames here, but oh well. lol I'll keep you updated.

What kidn of philosophy book are you reading? I was introduced to it as an undergrad and LOVED it. It's been a while since I've read any, though.

I just blogged about it today if you want the juicy details, but like you, I was introduced to philosophy as an undergrad, loved it, and did absolutely nothing about that love.

It's about time I stopped ignoring the little voice in the back of my head saying "take another course, read a book about it, do something."

The text I am reading is an introduction to the five great Western philosophical thinkers. It basically gives an overview, explains their arguments, and mentions the major critiques of their works. I'd like to read some of the original writing at some point, but I think this is a good starting place since I don't have a professor or other expert to guide me.

I look forward to reading the flames from the Scientologists . . .that could be quite amusing actually.

Anita,
I'll head over to your site and read all the gory details. I'm also a little hesitant to read the original works (even though I've had Plato's Republic on my shelf since that undergrad experience). I was naively confident back then. lol

I hope you enjoy The Shipping News. And, yes let us know what the hell scientologists are all about - ha,ha...
