The Confessional

Non Vocabulum has inspired me in turn. I come to you with a confessional style post...nothing hoity-toity, nothing overthought, just some candid thoughts on my reading life.
What reading life???
I'm in the knifey grip of the mother of all slumps, and it hinges on the fact that I'm starting my graduate degree on Tuesday. We're a mere 5 days from liftoff and, while I should be face-down in a book enjoying the last moments of carefree reading, I'm held captive, like a deer in the headlights, by the anticipation of beginning courses, mad research, and the reading of a whopping 20-something novels for my Oral Tradition Modern Fantasy and Contemporary British Literature courses. I overstate not...there are approximately 22 books piled in the corner of my bedroom waiting to be raped and pillaged. Gone are my days of picking up a waify, brain candy book.
I shall indeed let my raping and pillaging of my required readings pore over onto this page, but I'm still mourning the loss of my carefree reading days. The days of frolicking with Miss Havisham and Thursday through Jasper Fforde's world, laughing with Arlene Fleet thanks to Joshilyn Jackson, and laugh-crying with Jennifer Weiner (sweet Jesus, I can't wait until Goodnight Nobody hits the shelves!).
I will miss you freedom of choice. I will miss you.
Academia beckons (for now).

I remember those days when I was in college and had to read what THEY wanted me to read. It was a bummer and it took me several months after graduation to get over it. I hope you are able to find a balance and read what you want! And soon!
If you want to try The Position I'd be happy to mail it too you. I'll never reread it and it was an ARC. I'll be out no money but postage. Lemme know.
I forgot I can't wait for Goodnight Nobody either. Haven't read the first chapter though, I know it will make it worse.
I haven't read the first chapter either. I don't want to be any more tempted than I already am.
That sounds GREAT! You're a sweetie! I'll send you the addy.
::laughing:: I wonder what the great literary wonders both past and present would think of having their words.... errr....
'raped and pillaged'
Was that it? LOL... have fun practicing your ancient barbaric practices on those unsuspecting novels.
::grin:: I'm picturing you with a horned viking hat.. LOL it's lovely.
Well hopefully you can seduce the meaning etc out of the great works, raping and pillaging involves so much hard work
awaterpixie,
That's exactly what I had in mind!! I have my viking hat AND my pewter bra all polished and ready. I even brought a few instruments of torture: propane torch, rusty nails, and a Vanilla Ice CD.
Fence,
It would make my life MUCH more pleasant, but somehow I don't think I'll be that lucky.
Just passing through, I'm liking the blog by the way.
Thank you, critic! I hope you'll be back.
