Good Books

When I blog about books, I think only Andi and Suzz are really paying attention. I've known Andi and Suzz for well over 5 years now, having met each wonderful lady in an online book group back in late '99 or early- to mid-2000.

My book talk is very selfish. I'm sort of stroking myself because what I'm reading right now is so good that it's only got me more excited to move on to other books. Reading good books feels especially good after being in a crippling slump for most of this year. I've read just around 20 books so far, which I think is miserable. I'm not an obsessive counter, but I do feel good knowing I've knocked off a good 80 books per year because, let's be honest, I could be dead tomorrow and ALL the books in the world will go on without me, unread and unloved. The very thought fills me with grief.

So, anyway - Strange But True is incredible. I am 50 pages away from done and on the verge of starting Out by Natsuo Kirino.

You're thinking, "Out? Sounds like a gay book." It's a literary mystery. Here's the blurb:

This mesmerizing novel tells the story of a brutal murder in the staid Tokyo suburbs, as a young mother who works the night shift making boxed lunches strangles her abusive husband and then seeks the help of her co-workers to dispose of the body and cover up her crime. The coolly intelligent Masako emerges as the plot's ringleader but quickly discovers that this killing is merely the beginning, as it leads to a terrifying foray into the violent underbelly of Japanese society.
Sounds divine.

Dena,

I know I never post on your blog but I do read it occasionally. I'm sorry I never comment, it's silly but I'm shy and I don't usually comment until I "know" someone a little better. Guess I'm getting to know you a bit :)

I find you very entertaining, especially when you blog about books! I had a very rough reading year in 2003. I think I read about 20 books the whole year and I was around a 80 a year reader. I am just starting to come back from that slump and hope to make my 50+ goal this year. I'm glad that you are starting to find some good books that are pulling you out of your slump. I will be checking out "Out" as it sounds very interesting! I looked up "Strange but True" at Amazon and it sounds engrossing as well. I hope my library has both of these.

I'll be watching for your reviews!

Dena, Andi,
I love both your reviews... I hope you know that. For some reason - well, mostly because of university - I don't have much time to write comments.

Kathrin,
Thanks! I know how busy it can be. I'll be back in that situation in a couple of weeks!

Your book talk should be selfish, thats the only way it'd be honest. I used to have that whole "if you start then you must finish" thing. Not anymore, I don't have the time, and call me selfish :) but I'm not about to waste time on books I hate. Doesn't mean other people can't love them. I just don't get why Dan Brown managed to sell so many books.
